Awarded Best PhD thesis of the Faculty of Culture & Society 2023, nominated to best PhD thesis of Malmö University 2023.

In this doctoral dissertation Marika Hedemyr engages the fields of interaction design and choreography, to articulate composition practices for mobile phone–based augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) experiences. MR is introduced as a site-specific performance form; a format that can be used to reactivate public spaces and their political significance in society today.

In the research project, three MR walks were created in Göteborg and Mölndal, in collaboration with an artistic team and stakeholders from the art, cultural heritage and information technology sectors. This resulted in conceptual approaches and distinct practices for how to compose and understand MR as a performance practice that shapes, situates, and orients experiences.

The dissertation provides a thorough overview of the cross-disciplinary AR/MR field and its related technologies. Both the theoretical and practice-oriented contributions offered by this dissertation are relevant for scholars and practitioners in art and design who work with site-specific experiences involving technology.
